Hard water spots are mineral deposits, mostly calcium and magnesium, left when sprinkler or rain water dries on glass. Regular cleaning will not remove them. Fresh spots come off with a mineral treatment, and older spots can etch the glass, so the best fix is to stop the water from hitting the windows and treat the spots early.
Where they come from
Sprinkler water carries dissolved minerals. When it dries in the sun, the water leaves and the minerals stay as white spots. The longer they sit, the harder they bond to the glass.
How to prevent them
- Adjust sprinkler heads so they spray away from the house
- Water early in the morning, not in afternoon sun
- Clean the glass on a schedule so spots never build up
What not to do
Do not scrape spots with a razor on tempered glass, such as sliding doors and windows near doors, since it can scratch. Avoid harsh acids that can damage frames and landscaping. Point the spots out in your photos and they are priced separately in your written quote.
